Cartagena: History, Culture & Beaches

Tour Overview

Cartagena, a city with a rich history as a key hub of the Americas’ slave trade, boasts a unique cultural blend that is reflected in its vibrant music, cuisine, and architecture. Its charming Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, captivates visitors with its well-preserved colonial buildings, colorful streets, and lively squares. Here, Cumbia music fills the air as locals enjoy leisurely conversations and tourists capture the beauty of the city, often with the photogenic “planenqueras” in the background. The city’s neighborhoods offer a mix of experiences: Getsemani, with its energetic nightlife and local atmosphere, and San Diego, known for its affordable accommodations and inviting ambiance. Cartagena’s blend of colonial charm, cultural influences, and modern-day vibrancy makes it one of the Caribbean’s most attractive urban destinations. Just an hour’s drive away is San Basilio de Palenque, the first free town in the Americas founded by escaped slaves, adding even more depth to the city’s rich heritage.

Itinerary

Upon arrival in Cartagena, you’ll be welcomed by the city’s vibrant energy and rich history. Known for its well-preserved colonial architecture and colorful streets, Cartagena greets visitors with a blend of old-world charm and modern-day vibrancy. After your transfer to your hotel, take some time to relax and absorb the city’s unique atmosphere. Whether you choose to wander through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, explore lively squares, or simply enjoy the warm Caribbean breeze, Cartagena’s welcoming spirit and cultural richness will immediately captivate you.

Start your day with a visit to the Castillo de San Felipe, a 16th-century fortress built to defend Cartagena from pirates, where you’ll explore its underground tunnels and learn about its history. Next, enjoy a walking tour of Cartagena’s colonial walled city, visiting the Church of San Pedro Claver, the Naval Museum, and the city walls. Stop by Bolivar Park, with its fountains and statues, and the Inquisition Palace, renowned for its baroque architecture. In the afternoon, embark on a gastronomic adventure at Mercado Bazurto, Cartagena’s bustling central market. Led by a local guide, you’ll explore traditional ingredients before taking a cooking class to prepare authentic local dishes, immersing yourself in Cartagena’s rich culinary heritage.

Today, you’ll visit San Basilio de Palenque, a historic community founded by runaway slaves in the 17th century. As one of the few surviving “palenques,” it preserves unique social, medical, religious, and musical traditions rooted in African culture. Experience vibrant music like “Bullerengue,” “Son Palenquero,” and “Son de Negro,” often heard during local celebrations. The Palenquera language, a Creole mix of Spanish and Bantu, plays a key role in the community’s identity. This tour offers a rare glimpse into the rich history and cultural legacy of Afro-Colombian traditions.

Today, you’ll depart from Cartagena and head to Baru, where you’ll check into your hotel for the next leg of your stay. This serene island destination offers the perfect escape, with pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy your time at the hotel, whether lounging by the pool, exploring the area, or simply unwinding in the natural beauty of the Caribbean. With this tranquil setting as your base, you’ll have the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the island’s charm and enjoy a peaceful retreat.

This morning, you’ll be picked up by a speedboat for an exciting day ahead. Departing from the Baru Peninsula, the boat will head out into the Caribbean Sea, bound for the Rosario Islands. Located 21 miles from Cartagena, this archipelago is a protected National Park known for its pristine coral reefs and clear, turquoise waters. On board, you’ll be welcomed by the captain and crew, including a host to attend to your needs. Spend the day relaxing on the white sandy beaches, swimming, or snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters before returning in the afternoon.

Enjoy a relaxing day in Baru, where you can soak up the sun on beautiful beaches, swim in the clear blue waters, or simply unwind by the pool. Take a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, enjoy delicious local food, or just relax and take in the peaceful surroundings. If you prefer, you can also head back to Cartagena to explore any attractions you missed, or enjoy a little more time in the vibrant city. Whether you choose to stay in Baru or return to Cartagena, it’s the perfect day to relax and make the most of your trip.

Today we will say our farewells as we depart our hotel to  Rafael Nuñez International Airport to head home.
